Starting while it's still dark, and finishing as dawn is breaking, our annual Darkness into Light event is taking place on Saturday morning, 8th May 2010. This year it's being held in two locations - Phoenix Park, Dublin and the University of Limerick Campus, Limerick.
Meeting at approximately 4.15am, the 5km course can be walked, skipped, jogged or ran! There will be a special running lane for the hard core enthusiasts, and people are more than welcome to push children in buggies or bring along their dogs! This is very much a family event, and the course can be completed in your own time.
The price of registration includes a free Darkness into Light t-shirt and Race Pack, and there will be hot food and drinks available at the finish line. Obtaining sponsorship is not a requirement for this event, but if you would like to raise extra funds for Pieta House we will gladly help you with that.
Alternatively you can make an online donation on mycharity.ie!
Results of the Great Limerick Run are now online at www.greatlimerickrun.com . I know there are dozens of West Limerick athletes who competed in the three events. A special congratulations to Liz Hussey on winning the Ladies marathon event and to Dermot Kearns on his second placing in the men's event. Liz's post race interview is quoted in the Irish Times today.
Â
As soon as they are up we will give them out. Don't forget that the Irish Times will have a supplement tomorrow with race reports and full results.
Thousands gathered on the streets of Limerick yesterday to witness the return of the Limerick Marathon after an absence of a number of decades. The first runners, those participating in the marathon gathered around Pery Square yesterday morning with coffee and a few nerves thrown in. We met a lot of familiar faces and club runners and the chat was flowing. The timing of the event was to perfection and at 9am the runners headed up O'Connell Avenue and down Henry Street. The first 6 miles took us out to the Castletroy and University area. Part of the route involved doubling back for a stretch of one mile - for those of us 'further down the field' we were given the opportunity to view the leaders and to cheer them on. It was great to see familiar runners, including West Limerick's Dermot Kearns, Kevin Johnson, Geoff De Courcey, Liz Hussey to name but a few leading the race.

The race went back into town and we were joined by the participants in the Half marathon at 11am. We proceeded into the countryside for a few miles out towards Ballyclough area which was lonely at times, around the 17 -20 mile mark. We chatted to a number of the walkers at the back of the half marathon. Many thanks to Valerie Vaughan who was cycling alongside some of us and  gave me a banana and drinks that got me through a difficult patch.
Galway City Marathon takes place on the 29th August 2010. For more details log on to www.galwaycitymarathon.com for more details. Also click on link below for interesting article about the launch.
Best of luck to all West Limerick AC runners who are participating in the Great Limerick Run this weekend. Don't forget to wear your West Limerick singlet to ensure recognition and plenty of cheer!
West Limerick AC are holding an exhibition at the EXPO in Thomond Park on Saturday. Make sure you call by to say hello when collecting yoru race number and chip.

UPDATE ON RESULTS OF MUNSTER VETERANS ROAD RACE
Monday, 29 March 2010 20:16
The results are now available. There were many winners from West Limerick AC. Many congratulations to Carmel MacDomhnaill on winning gold in her category and to Fiona Burke on winning bronze in hers and coming a commendable 7th overall!! Dermot Kearns was first overall in the men's section and  Joe Chawke won bronze in his category.
We had a great turnout and an event like this is not just about winning medals but about participating as a team. Runners like Willie Costello, Seamus Cawley, John O'Shea, Paul Maloney, Niall Collins to name but a few who regularly turn up and run and support events like this.
What events like this also demonstrate is the committment given by volunteers in allowing such races to run smoothly. In this regard, special thanks must be given to people like Liam Healy and Mark Dempsey who dealt with various aspects of organisation such as time keeping and record taking, to members like Ger Guinoa and Tom Brouder who marshalled and signalled at junctions, to Kathleen Brouder who was in the kitchen making tea and organising refreshments, to all members including runners who brought sandwiches, cakes, biscuits, to photograpers like Gordon Thomson who consistently give up their Sunday morning sleep in to attend events like this.
No medals but team participants nonetheless...................
